How to deblur text in an image

Text in a blurry photo can usually be recovered if the letter shapes are still faintly visible. Use AI enhancement instead of a sharpening filter: the model rebuilds character edges, which is what makes the difference between almost readable and readable.

The letter-shape test

Zoom in on the blurriest word you need. Can you see where each letter starts and ends, even if you cannot read them? If yes, the structure survives and enhancement has something to build on. If the line has become a continuous grey band, the information is gone.

Why sharpening is the wrong tool here

When a model reconstructs a character it cannot resolve, it produces the most likely one, not the true one. A blurry 3 can come back as an 8. That is fine for a shop name in a holiday photo and not fine for an amount on an invoice or a serial number.

For anything where the exact characters matter, treat the enhanced version as a hint that tells you where to look, then verify against the original document. If you cannot verify, do not rely on it.

Capture better next time

Two habits fix most text photos at the source. Tap the screen on the text before you shoot, so the camera focuses on the words and not on whatever is behind them. And brace the phone against something solid in low light, because the shutter stays open longer and your hands are not as steady as they feel.

When you are photographing a document, shoot it straight on, not at an angle. A tilted page puts one edge outside the depth of field, and that edge is usually where the important line is.
