How to unblur a photo in Canva

Canva gives you two routes: an AI unblur tool, and Sharpness and Clarity sliders in its photo editor. The AI tool is the better start for a soft photo; the sliders only firm up edges that are already there.

Unblurring in Canva, step by step

Both methods work in the browser and in the Canva app. Canva says its unblur tool is free and adds no watermark.

  1. Upload the photo

Open a design, upload the blurry image and add it to the page.

  2. Open Edit

Select the image and choose Edit from the toolbar to see the effects and adjustments.

  3. Try the AI unblur first

Apply the unblur or enhance option among the photo tools, then zoom in to compare it with the original.

  4. Or adjust by hand

Under Adjust, raise Sharpness a little and Clarity a little. Small amounts look natural; high values outline everything in halos.

  5. Download as PNG

PNG avoids another round of JPEG compression on the sharpened edges.

Where it stops. The sliders are classic sharpening: they raise contrast on edges that exist and cannot recover detail the blur removed. On a strongly blurred face they produce halos and a crunchy texture. Canva is a design tool first, so there is no repair for scratches, fading or damage on old photos.

Where Canva makes sense

Canva is the right place when the blurry image is headed into something you are already building there: a flyer, a slide, a social post. The photo only needs to look sharp at the size it appears in the design, often far smaller than full screen, so a modest fix is enough.

Upscaling in Canva

Canva also offers an upscale option for small images. Upscaling raises the pixel count, which helps a photo that is soft because it is small. It does not fix motion blur or a missed focus.

When a dedicated app is the better route

Use a dedicated app when the photo is the point rather than an element in a design: a family snapshot you want to keep, an old print, a face that has to look like the person. A model trained for faces and damage rebuilds what Canva’s sliders can only emphasise, on the phone where the photo already is.

The tool to start with is Unblur photo.

Questions

Can Canva unblur a picture?

Yes, within limits. Canva has an AI unblur option and Sharpness and Clarity sliders. They help mildly soft photos; strong motion blur and missed focus need a dedicated deblur model.

Is Canva’s unblur tool free?

Canva says its unblur tool is free and adds no watermark. Some other AI features in Canva are limited on the free plan, so check what your account includes.
