How to restore old photos on a Samsung phone

Galaxy phones give you two free starting points: Remaster picture in Gallery and the Galaxy Enhance-X app. Both help with softness and noise; neither is built for torn, cracked or badly faded prints.
Samsung’s own tools, step by step
Capture the print first, then run Samsung’s tools on the capture and compare.
- Capture the print
Lay it flat in daylight with the flash off and shoot straight down. If the camera offers to scan it as a document, skip that: document scanning boosts contrast for text.
- Remaster it in Gallery
Open the capture, tap the three-dot menu and choose Remaster picture. It sharpens, brightens and cleans up noise in one pass.
- Try Galaxy Enhance-X
If your model supports it, install Galaxy Enhance-X from the Galaxy Store and run its blur and old-photo tools on the same capture.
- Compare before deleting anything
Both tools keep the original. Put the results side by side and keep the better one.
Where it stops. Remaster applies one general treatment, so on an old print it sharpens grain and damage along with the picture. Reviewers found Enhance-X’s old-photo mode inconsistent, and prints with visible damage specks or heavy colour fade did not always go through its restoration at all.
Which Galaxy phones have what
Remaster picture has been in Gallery for several One UI generations, though its place in the menu moves between versions. Galaxy Enhance-X launched on flagship and foldable models and reached others over time. If either is missing, your model is not supported, and Google Photos is the free fallback.
When a dedicated app is the better route
Move to a dedicated restorer for torn, cracked and stained prints, prints faded to grey or orange, class photos and group shots where the faces are small, and anything you plan to print larger than the original.
The tool to start with is Repair a damaged photo.
Questions
Can Samsung Remaster restore old photos?
It improves softness, brightness and noise on a capture of an old photo, which helps a slightly faded print. It does not repair cracks, tears, stains or heavy fading.
Is Galaxy Enhance-X free?
Yes, it is a free Samsung app in the Galaxy Store, but it only installs on supported models. Check the Galaxy Store on your phone to see whether it is offered.
